1971 | Ray Gassner

Ray Gassner

Until retiring from race driving in 1967 Ray was considered by many to be the best known sports personality to represent St. Petersburg FL for a quarter of a century.

His racing victories included the Seattle Seafair Trophy race and the Miami Grand Prix. He was a former 266 hydro national champion and a 7 Litre record-holder. In his obituary, sportwriter Red Marston wrote, "Honors he took with modesty. Losses he accepted with dignity. He never forgot to say thanks. Ray loved victory but he wasn't dying to win."
