One of the country's outstanding boat racing drivers, Thompson set records and was a consistent winner in both Outboard and Unlimited classes (driving the Miss Pepsi), and was 1951-52 High Point winner. He won the President's Cup four times. He also served on numerous commissions and committees, and was a member of the Gulf Hall of Fame and the Gulf 100 MPH Club.
